Deposits of Porphyry are formed when a column of rising magma is cooled in two stages. In the first the magma is cooled slowly creating large crystals with a diameter of 2mm or more. In the final stage, the magma is cooled rapidly creating small grains usually invisible to the naked eye. This beautiful and durable stone has been valued as a construction material for well over 3 000 years. It was used by the Minoan civilisation in Crete 1 850 BC, in the palace of King Minos at Knossos. The Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used Porphyry for pavements, buildings and monuments. Some relics of these remain today a testament to the durability of this beautiful stone. |
